Your Eclipse Essentials Checklist
In addition to all of your usual great hospitality practices, there are three additional keys to success for your Eclipse 2024 guests.
Guide your guests where to go
For most destinations in the path, the eclipse will occur during lunch hours or school pickup periods. With this regular daily traffic plus an influx of visitors trying to get to destination hot spots, your community can get congested and unpleasant quickly. Encourage your guests to stay at your property and simply head outside and look up!
Supply or suggest proper eyewear
Proper eyewear is a must for the safe viewing of any eclipse. Safe solar filters or viewers are those that meet the ISO 12312-2 international standard, like those from Celestron or American PaperWear, suppliers endorsed by the American Astronomical Society. (Note: Beware of glasses that “NASA approved” – NASA does not approve any brands.)
Send your guests helpful information on where to get proper eyewear online or locally, or consider providing glasses as a special guest gift!
Connect with your local tourism organisation for more local fun
The period of total eclipse lasts only a few minutes, with a partial eclipse beginning about an hour before. That means there will be plenty of time for other eclipse-related fun during your guests’ stay. Visit your local destination marketing organization or tourism board’s website to see what other special events or things to do might be happening in town in the days around the eclipse, and be sure to share them with your guests!

SETTING THE RIGHT EXPECTATIONS WITH HOSPITABLE HOUSE RULES & GREAT COMMUNICATIONS
Crafting house rules effectively is an art, a perfect balance of clear but cheerful – clearful! Plus, when guests send questions or requests that indicate they might inadvertently – or intentionally – cause issues, responding in a friendly but firm way heads off problems while maintaining a positive relationship.

EXTENDING HOSPITALITY THROUGH INCLUSIVITY & SAFETY
LGBTQ+ travel is a $218 billion travel niche, and 60% of these travelers rate safety as a top priority. Black travelers spent nearly $109 billion on travel in the U.S. in 2019, but 42% feel unwelcome in their destination. 89% of women routinely take extreme safety precautions when they travel.
Safety and inclusivity are non-negotiables for travelers – and big wins for hosts.
HOSTING FOR THE LONG-TERM WITH SUSTAINABILITY IN MIND
85% of travelers want to stay in sustainable accommodations, and 3 in 5 are willing to pay more for them. Can your property win these travelers while protecting the planet? (Yes, it can!)
MAKING VACATIONS ACCESSIBLE FOR ALL TRAVELERS
61 million American adults have a disability. Travelers with disabilities have the desire to travel more, and do travel more than any underrepresented group. Still, there is a significant lack of accessible STR nationwide. Upgrading your property to be more accessible is easier than you think! There are dozens of simple, stylish ways to welcome more travelers without major renovations.
